Heartbreaking
It is heartbreaking to learn that Steven Curtis Chapman's 5-year-old daughter was killed yesterday in an auto accident. Apparently, her older brother did not see her in the driveway and backed over her.
A friend and I were recently at a church event where his song "I'll dance with cinderella" was played. It's a tear-jerking song about our daughters growing up and leaving our homes, but the lyrics seems especially sad in light of this tragedy.
She spins and she sways to whatever song plays,
Without a care in the world.
And I'm sittin' here wearin' the weight of the world on my shoulders.
It's been a long day and there's still work to do,
She's pulling at me saying "Dad I need you!
There's a ball at the castle and I've been invited and I need to practice my dancin'"
"Oh please, daddy, please!"
So I will dance with Cinderella
While she is here in my arms
'Cause I know something the prince never knew
Oh I will dance with Cinderella
I don't wanna miss even one song,
Cuz all to soon the clock will strike midnight
And she'll be gone
She says he's a nice guy and I'd be impressed
She wants to know if I'd approve of a dress
She says "Dad, the prom is just one week away,
And I need to practice my dancin'"
"Oh please, daddy, please!"
So I will dance with Cinderella
While she is here in my arms
'Cause I know something the prince never knew
Ohh-oh ohh-oh, I will dance with Cinderella
I don't wanna miss even one song,
Cuz all to soon the clock will strike midnight
And she'll be gone
She will be gone.
Well, she came home today
With a ring on her hand
Just glowin' and tellin' us all they had planned
She says "Dad, the wedding's due six months away
And I need to practice my dancin'"
"Oh please, daddy please!"
So I will dance with Cinderella
While she is here in my arms
'Cause I know something the prince never knew
Ohh-oh ohh-oh, I will dance with Cinderella
I don't wanna miss even one song,
(even one song)
Cuz all to soon the clock will strike midnight
And she'll be gone
One piece of advice I received from multiple sources when I was pregnant was to treasure every moment - to find some way to enjoy the midnight feedings and the diaper changes and all the other sometimes tiresome duties new parents have. From these lyrics, it seems Mr. Chapman was able to do that. Let's all pray for this family, and learn from this incident.

I heard this song on the radio this morning on the way to church. Cried the whole way through the song! Not only is it particularly heart-wrenching because of the tragedy of him losing his daughter, but I can identify so much with the song. I've been dreading the day Abbie will leave home almost as soon as she was born. I just can't imagine not having her in the same house. Of course, I might feel differently once she reaches those dreaded teenage years. I might be ready for her to leave then! Maybe, but I doubt it...
