Post-election thoughts
I had a history teacher in high school who had the catch phrase of "you can't legislate morals." She managed to work this phrase into almost every class. As much as I believed her at the time, I'm afraid I've been guilty most of my adult life of thinking you can.
I'm very confused by Obama's election, and even his nomination. His lack of experience, his ties to very questionable people, but perhaps most confused by his extreme liberal views. We have some very divisive issues in this country, and I would expect anyone expected to lead all of us would have more moderate views. He believes in creating embryos specifically for scientific research - creating life to destroy it. Even most pro-choice Americans agree that is going too far. So I would have thought he would have lost all but the most liberal vote, losing any moderates.
But elected he was, and I think we have to accept that perhaps his election reflects the viewpoints of America's majority. I guess when the pro-choicers screamed "get out of my womb," they meant it.
In any event, I read an article the other day that made me realize how much I was expecting government to influence the moral climate in our country, and that's simply not the way it works.
